Community
Service Credit for Volunteers
PIA recruits high
school students seeking credit-based Community Service work, as role models
for PIA’s non-disabled
younger campers. Before the start of camp, these ‘tuition exempt’ teens,
ages 16 to 18, receive training in disability awareness and emergency aid
techniques, including CPR training. The training includes a workshop about
disability awareness and sensitivity. The students are briefed on
communicating and interacting with differently abled people.
They are also given guidance on distinguishing between various
disabilities, using respectful language, and providing assistance without
being patronizing.
